• Publications

Some selected publications are listed below forming part of the the industry leadership on critical issues on Climate Change and construction industry innovation:

Climate Shock: Engineering in The Anthropocene, December 2022.

This essay was developed to set out ideas for a lecture to The Engineering School at The University of Southampton as part of Adrian’s Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor role.

Refocusing MMC on the Climate Emergency - A Five Capitals Model for Action, The Structural Engineer, to be published September 2020

This paper provides a new model for review of offsite construction to achieve more regenerative system design. It was co-authored with Professor Robert Hairstans of Napier University and Guilia Jones of Mace.

Manufacturing Buildings for People and Planet, The Structural Engineer, 2020

The paper argues that system metrics must include broader design criteria, particularly embodied carbon, as part of the metrics of delivery and not just focus on productivity. It was co-authored with Matt Cooper of Arup and Andrew Waugh the founder of Waught Thistelon Architects.

What Engineers (Still) Don’t Know About Wood, IWPJ, 2020

Paper for the International Wood Products Journal on gaps in knowledge and research necessary for the successful adoption of mass timber building systems. The paper covers a range of issues from in-service performance such as durability and fire performance to use in more complex structures and sustainability of supply.

  • Lecturing and Teaching

Adrian is a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor of Sustainability and Climate Impact at The University of Southampton working in the Engineering School to help development their education programme to integrate the UN Sustainable Development Goals and regenerative principles.

He also lectures at the university on sustainable development, as well as low carbon and offsite construction.

He is currently working on a Regenerative Building Design guide as part of the architectural modules as a response to increasing need to provide guidance ion building approaches in the Climate Emergency.

  • Industry Support

changebuilding is a signatory to Structural Engineers Declare and also members of the ASBP.

Adrian has undertaken multiple peer reviews of books, reports and industry papers to help support awareness and thoroughness in action on climate and the ecological crisis. This includes recent work reviewing the LCCG low carbon concrete routemap and work on benchmarking of concrete systems.

Adrian is part of [Y]our 2040 researching and reviewing the meaning and methods for more regenerative outcomes. His particular focus is on knees Regenerative Development Goals (RDGs) to supplement the current UN SDGs.

  • Talks

Adrian is a regular speaker and contributor at various industry and also academic events.

Some of the more recent are noted below.

    Mass Timber Academy, Edinburgh (2020)

Talks on the circular economy and the frontier of engineering knowledge on mass timber use as part of a series of seminars for engineers and architects.

The Lean Green Building Dream Revisited (2019)

Thinking Out Loud thought leadership talk at HOK London in April 2019 on manufactured construction and sustainability reflecting on 20 years since Adrian’s IDBE masters thesis on lean construction and sustainability.

Design for Durability, Timber Expo (2018)

Talk and panel discussion on issues related to building durability and design for extended service life as part of a TRADA talk series of Timber Expo.

    Timber’s Good Right? (2015)

This Breakfast with Arup talk was themed on the emerging use of timber in construction and noting the need to consider wide ranging performance issues to make it successful as a material to replace traditional constriuction methods.
